TriFest 2009 Hallein a big success

TriFest 2009 in Hallein welcomed over 400 visitors over during the three days with a colourful range of product information, lectures and workshops. With approximately 500 m2 of exhibition area, over 25 exhibitors showcased the absolute latest product developments for the endurance sport disciplines. Visitors were offered a wide range of advice encompassing specialities such as modern sports socks, swim wear, running kit, optimal food supplements and the latest in cycling technology.

The old Saline, Hallein operational from 1198 until 1989 is now one of the most original venues for culture and exhibitions. Steeped in history and with an un-paralleled atmosphere, you will find everything you need all under one roof.

History

The story of the Alte Saline begins in 1198 where it began as a Celtic centre for Salt production. During the 13th Century the town was originally known by the name of Salina, but eventually became Hallein, meaning small hall.

The brine was heated in large pans so that the water would evaporate, leaving behind the rough salt, some of which can still be found in the halls of Alte Saline.

In 1989, the millennium-old salt production ended with the closure of the Saline and the cessation of salt production on the Dürrnberg. Since then the Alte Saline hall has become a centre for art and culture, including productions with the Salzburg Festival, the International Summer Academy and culture of the Hall Forum. The old halls still retain much of the character from the original salt industry, giving the venue a style and personality of its own.

Faris-Al-Sultan is one of the superstars of triathlon. Outspoken, controversial and one of the biggest characters in the sport. Faris will be sharing his views, philosophies and training tips with us at TriFest 2009.

Faris al-Sultan born January 21, 1978 in Munich, Germany to a German mother and an Iraqi father, is a professional triathlete and the winner of the 2005 Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Faris is known for his strengths in all three triathlon disciplines. In the running segment, he has a consistent but uncommon form of a long stride and loose arms, described as "looping." In competition, he typically wears a Speedo and half-singlet. His interest in triathlon was inspired by Thomas Hellriegel, a German triathlete.

Al-Sultan started out as a collegiate swimmer before taking on triathlon. His first Ironman in 1997 was the notoriously difficult Lanzarote Ironman, which he completed in a time of 10:33. Al-Sultan won his first Ironman at the inaugural running of Ironman Arizona in 2005. He competed at the Ironman world championships in Hawaii in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004 before finally winning there in 2005. The favorite that year, fellow German Normann Stadler, withdrew due to flat tires. In al-Sultan's return to defend the title in 2006, he placed third. At the 2007 championships, Faris did not compete due to a case of gastroenteritis the morning of the race. He said choosing not to compete "was one of the hardest decisions of my life."[1]

In addition to his athletic training, al-Sultan was a graduate student at Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, working on a Master's degree in Arabic language, literature, and history. Al-Sultan dropped out of graduate school before completing his degree in order to focus on triathlons.
